Esch, Luxembourg February 17, 1919

Dear Folks:
Have had a rare treat for the past twenty four hours and I know you can't guess in a thousand years what occasioned it.

Last night we showed over at Rummelange, Luxembourg and while the show was going on and just after I had gotten off the stage - here came an orderly behind the scenes and said Lieutenant Gates was in the audience and would be up right after the show. I hadn't the slightest idea where he was as I had never heard from him or of him - he had been in the 7th Engineers ever since he left Mount Ayr for Leavenworth. Of course, you remember him. I was certainly tickled to see him. He insisted that I stay all night and I didn't need any urging and we went up to his room - and two other Lieutenants came up soon and we had a regular party which lasted until rather early in the morning. What a treat and then I went over to his office this morning and visited with him until about ten thirty and then he had a car brought around and I rode back to Esch. I haven't enjoyed an evening like that since I came to France or Luxembourg as far as that is concerned.

We are playing every night and the show is going over fine. We will be out until the Division moves for Germany or home. It is just like being out of the Army - not a thing to do in the day time but mess around and then show somewhere in the evening - we have been going by train quite a little and the train service is excellent over here too. Tonight we go in a truck though. We can sleep as long as we wish - have a fine room, toilet, steam heat and it's just like home. I am content to do this until we are called home but how I wish that would be soon.
