Troyon, France February 2, 1919

Dear Folks:
Well here we are - the first stop we have made on our tour over this beastly country of France. We left Houdelaincourt yesterday morning about eight thirty and I am here at Troyon - almost sixty kilometers north of Houdelaincourt. It is near St. Mihiel where so much of the heavy fighting was done by the U.S. soldiers.

We are going out and take a look at no-mans land in the morning. The towns are literally shot to pieces - so are the trees along the road and four or five kilometers from here there are a bunch of skeletons hanging around on a fence, etc. - that have been there since they were pulverized by bullets. We are going out in the morning to see the place. It will be worth seeing.

Don't know where we go from here but we are apt to be sent anywhere from here. We get to go over to Germany before long and that is what I want to see - we are going to see many interesting sights on this trip and probably can find some interesting stuff in the way of souvenirs. I hope so as I will send them home if possible.

We are here in this town for three days and are certainly being treated fine - plenty to eat and a good place to sleep and a good place to put on our show.

Can't do miracles for the "J.P." stuff. Don't think head would like it very much, do you - but that is up to him.

Am glad that Merritt has a nice place to live and that he is going to like the oil business. There should be good money in it if he can get out on the roads alright and doesn't have bad luck with his trucks.

It has rained quite a little here but isn't so very cold though.

Think I might quit and hunt for my pipe.
